What is a prayer blanket?
As you may have read in the "About Leah Grey" section, I grew up in and around Mennonite country (super cool looking back, not as cool at the time) and attended a Mennonite Brethren church while growing up.
When I became pregnant with my son, I was only twenty-one years old and I was scared! Not only was I scared but I was also ashamed. I felt guilty as I carried the growing evidence of my sin (but what a blessing he was!). A Mennonite woman from my church gifted me a prayer blanket. I had never heard of a prayer blanket but my mother told me it was knit together with prayers for my son and I's future. "What a lovely idea!" I thought, as I tucked away the blanket for later.
Today, the blanket sits in my sunroom, where I do my Bible studies and work on material for Grey Ministries. The presence of the blanket always makes me feel cared for. I look at it and remember fond memories of a simple childhood: wooden floors and homemade iced tea sitting on a back porch, eating Paska for Easter at the church lunch, wheat and asparagus fields and going to Bible study, sipping tea in the home of a lovely woman named, Helen- who to this day, still covers me in prayer.
The prayer blanket was more than a gift. It was a reminder that I was loved- in spite of any error I had ever made.
Giant wool blankets have been trending around the blogosphere for a while now. They're fluffy and soft and knit either by hand or with giant knitting needles. I've taken it a step further to knit them by hand and cover them in prayers.
480 prayers, to be exact (for a large blanket).
"For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise you
because I have been remarkably and wondrously made. Your works are wondrous, and I know this very well."
-Psalm 139:13-14 (CSB)
It is my hope that this blanket serves as a reminder that you are so very loved. You're more than worthy of every gift because our Father who created you knit you together piece by piece. And on the days when it feels like nothing will ever get better, snuggle up under your blanket of prayer and remember that the Lord has good plans for your future!
"'For I know the plans I have for you'—this is the Lord’s declaration—'plans for your well-being, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. You will call to me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.'"
-Jeremiah 29:11-12 (CSB)
About the wool:
Merino wool is considered to be the softest and finest wool in the world. Our wool comes from a reputable, family-owned textile company in Yorkshire, England (in fact, you can pop in and visit the factory should you be there for a visit!). We chose the U.K. because the Brits know their wool! Where better to go than to the experts and origin of warm and fuzzy textiles?!
- crazy soft: You have to feel it!
- flame retardant (say, what?!)
- stain resistant: not stain-proof
- odour resistant
- wrinkle resistant: shake it out and it'll be good as new
- water resistant
- naturally elastic
- helps to regulate body temperature and heart-rate: that's one healthy blanket!
- renewable resource (yes- love that!)
Caring for your blanket:
Wool doesn't need to be washed like other textiles. This blanket was created for prayer and simple pleasures, not for high-traffic use. First and foremost, a good, old-fashioned shake will be the very best way to clean your blanket. It is recommended to only spot-clean the blanket when it is necessary- it's all it needs!
Should the blanket suffer great spillage, the label says, "Dry Clean Only". However, if you're a laundry superstar, you will be able to carefully wash your blanket on your own. Simply lay it in the bathtub with a touch of wool-specific detergent and cold water. Do not rub the wool together or the wool will "felt"! Let it soak for about twenty minutes before gently removing the blanket and laying it flat to dry. Do not hang the blanket or it will stretch the wool.
Want to get really creative? Try washing it with snow! See the tutorial here.
If your blanket has imperfections and woolly bits that are sticking out or not laying properly, simply smooth it out with your hands. The wool will attach itself to the other pieces like magic. Do not pull the wayward wool or your blanket will fray.
Have a question? No problem!
Each blanket is handmade. Exact dimensions, overall weight and total prayers may vary slightly between products. However, we do our best to appropriately represent the purchase. Most blankets are generally slightly larger than the size noted above.
